How to add a dependent to my F-1 visa?

Since you are planning to bring dependent(s), you will need to provide the following documents:

1. Your spouse’s biographical passport page

2. Each child’s biographical passport page

3. A copy of your marriage license/certificate

4. Copy of each child’s birth certificate

5. Additional $5000 USD for the spouse and $3000 per child you plan to bring

6. Proof of health insurance on each dependent

All supporting documents must be in English or accompanied by a notarized English translation.

For dependents to enter the U.S. in F-2 status (provide dependent information below) $5,000 will be added to expenses section of your I-20 for a spouse and $3,000 for each child.

COST OF SUPPORTING DEPENDENT FAMILY MEMBERS The estimated costs given above ($5,000 for the spouse, $3,000 per child) include basic living expenses only. The estimates do not include the cost of health insurance or children’s’ preschool/day care.
